Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or you’re not a book person, you will have heard of and probably seen Netflix’s hit series Shadow and Bone, based on the bestselling novels by Leigh Bardugo.
The series crosses two of the “Grishaverse” series that Bardugo has created – Shadow and Bone and the Six of Crows, to make one huge melting pot of fantasy, adventure, romance and mystery.
The first series was a huge success, with 55 million households watching the first season within the first 28 days of its release. With those numbers in mind, it is easy to see why a second series was commissioned so quickly.
Here’s a quick update of what we think about the next series.
Will there be another merger of plots?
It makes sense to keep the plots of the two series of books running alongside each other now. Plus everyone knows Kaz, Inej and Jesper (Freddy Carter, Amita Suman and Kit Young respectively) are the absolute breakout stars of this series. It wouldn’t be the same if they weren’t in it or if their storyline didn’t follow the books but Alina, Mal and General Kirigans’s stories did.
What will be in store for Alina and Mal?
If you haven’t read the books (why not?), I suggest you devour them before the next series. If you cannot be bothered, please read on.
There is a huge cliffhanger at the end of Series 1. Mainly we think General Kirigan (Ben Barnes) has been devoured by his own creatures, but alas we are not that lucky – or unlucky – to have him defeated just yet. There are three books after all, so potentially another season after this.
We see Kirigan crawling out of the fold, more powerful than ever and we have to wonder what his plan is now.
Alina and Mal will try to escape and keep ahead of him, but it’s not always possible with the Fold expansion and travel limitations. They meet new friends but can they trust everyone they meet?
Will Kaz and his team ever be free?
Probably not, Crooked Kingdom (the second Six of Crows book and probably the basis for their plot in series 2) follows them back to Ketterdam where one of the team is kidnapped. With resources scarce and morale low, will the team survive?
We hope so, the three of them are firm fan favourites and it was a lovely surprise to realise they were in season one so fingers crossed, they get some decent air time in the next series.
Who is in it?
The main cast have all signed on again, bar a few notable exceptions (if you have read the book, you’ll know why).
Jessie Mei Li will be back as Alina Starkov, the Sun Summoner
Archie Renaux plays Malyen Oretsev
Freddy Carter as Kaz Brekker
Amita Suman as the brilliant Inej
Kit Young as Jesper Frey
Ben Barnes as General Kirigan
Danelle Galligan as Nina Zenik
Calahan Skogman as Matthias Helvar
We’ll keep you updated as news comes in of this as we’re too excited to keep it to ourselves! Shadow and Bone is showing on Netflix now.
